Parks Canada manages an extensive world-class system of protected natural and cultural heritage areas where Canadians, and people from around the globe, can experience the best Canada has to offer. All of these places provide visitors high-quality experiences while contributing significantly to local economies.
To maintain its operations, Parks Canada relies largely on government appropriations and supplements its budget with revenues from user fees. Government appropriations are used primarily to protect cultural and natural heritage in Canada for the benefit of all Canadians. Revenues generated by fees partially recover the costs required to provide those products and services, for which users receive a personal benefit.
These fees are set so that Parks Canada can provide amazing experiences and great value to visitors, and continue to make important contributions to tourism across the country.
Upcoming fee changes at Parks Canada
In 2019, Parks Canada conducted public and stakeholder consultations on fees. Canadians from across the country took part in these conversations, and their feedback helped inform upcoming fee changes that will take effect beginning in January 2023.
These updates will not affect admission or front-country camping, but will result in changes to fees that offer a high level of individual benefits to visitors, such as enhanced experiences, facility rentals and special event permits.
These updates will help Parks Canada recover a greater portion of the costs of service delivery by reflecting changes to the cost of living since fees were last reviewed in 2008. These changes will also bring some Parks Canada fees closer to those charged by nearby tourism providers, helping to avoid unfair competition with local businesses providing similar services and experiences. Examples include special guided tours, cross-country skiing, golfing, and access to hot pools.
On January 1, 2020, Parks Canada began a cycle of adjusting fees for inflation every two years based on the requirements of the 2017 Services Fees Act. The Agency will continue the cycle of adjusting fees every two years based on inflation. The next fee adjustment as part of this cycle will take place on January 1, 2022. At that time, fees will be adjusted by 4.2%.
