Celebrating Jewish Heritage Month

Dear colleagues,

In May, we mark Canadian Jewish Heritage Month. Since its official designation in 2018, this month provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding of Jewish heritage and culture. It’s a time to recognize and honour the remarkable and multifaceted contributions that Jewish Canadians have made, and continue to make, to Canada’s diversity and prosperity.

Jewish Canadians comprise the fourth-largest Jewish diaspora in the world, with roots that span many regions and cultures. From groundbreaking achievements in the arts and sciences to significant leadership in business, law, and social justice, their impact is woven into the fabric of Canadian society.

Through its mandate, Parks Canada protects and presents nationally significant examples of Canada’s natural and cultural heritage, including several Jewish heritage designations. Additionally, a recent episode of ReCollections, a Parks Canada podcast, titled “Fort Lennox: The Accidental Immigrants”, tells the story of Jewish refugees from Nazi Europe and highlights their resilience in the face of hardship.

As we celebrate Canadian Jewish Heritage Month, we invite team members to take a moment to learn, reflect, and deepen their understanding of the diverse contributions of Jewish Canadians. Throughout the month, alongside heritage designations, explore featured content highlighting recipients of the Order of Canada, visual art, literary works, and a curated music playlist. These weekly spotlights offer meaningful opportunities to engage with Jewish Canadian creativity and culture. Visit the dedicated ParksNet page and participate in these learning opportunities.

Sincerely, and Shalom (peace),
