Fort Langley National Historic Site
Created in collaboration with the Canucks Autism Network, this Visual Guide is designed to help prepare visitors by increasing predictability and reducing anxiety in a new environment. Use this guide to know what to expect on your first visit to Fort Langley National Historic Site.
Welcome to Fort Langley
Fort Langley is a National Historic Site. It is located in the Langley Township.
Accessibility
Fort Langley has facilities and amenities to support visitors with reduced mobility.
There is accessible parking, washrooms and access to buildings and exhibits.

Visitor centre
You will arrive at the Visitor Centre.
First, go to the front desk. Then, pay for your admission.
You might have to wait in a line, but it won’t take long!

Site guide
This is the Site Guide available at the Visitor Centre.
You can use it to:
- see where the buildings are
- plan your route
- find the washrooms
Entering the fort
After the Visitor Centre it is time to enter the Fort!
First, follow the pathway. Then, enter through the main gate.
Explore the fort
Once you are through the gates it is time to explore!
You can use your Site Guide for directions.
Remember to stay with the people you came with!
Fort Langley staff and volunteers
There are staff and volunteers who are dressed in fur trading costumes.
You can talk to them if you need assistance or want to learn more about the fort.
Cooperage
The cooperage is where coopers built barrels.
- Meet the cooper.
- Watch a demonstration.
- Try building a bucket!
Storehouse
The storehouse is the oldest building at Fort Langley!
There are examples of the items used in trades.
Note!
There can be a strong smell in this building.
You can step out if you need a break.
Blacksmith
Watch the blacksmith make tools.
Ask questions about what they are making!
Note!
This area can be noisy with loud sounds and sparks.
Children’s play area
Time to play at the children’s area!
This building is a great area for smaller kids to climb, play and learn more about Fort Langley.
Servants quarters
This is the servants’ quarters building.
Go inside and see displays showing what it was like to live at Fort Langley.
Big house
Welcome to the Big house!
First, go inside to see how the managers lived. Then, visit the gallery upstairs.
Remember, do not go past the roped off areas!
Farm and garden
Check out the farm and garden.
In the summer you will see animals here such as chickens and goats!
Taking a break
Remember to take a break whenever you need!
There are picnic tables and chairs throughout the grounds. Bring your own food and enjoy a picnic!
Find a Quiet Space
There are different quiet areas around the fort.
- Visit the garden.
- Go to the theatre building (if there is no film showing).
Activities
Sometimes there are special events at the fort.
It can be fun to watch!
You can take a break in a quiet place if it is too
Gold panning
Try panning for gold!
You can ask a staff member for help.
Sometimes this activity is closed in the winter.
Xplorer Program
Xplorer program is a fun way to experience the Fort!
They are available at the Visitor Centre.
If you complete the pamphlet of activities you can get a prize at the end of your visit!
Leaving the fort
Leave the same way you entered.
Go through the gate and down the path.
Exit through the Visitor Centre.
