Where Waters Connect

Embark on a guided journey through time on North St. Marys Island, where waterways, cultures, and innovation converge. This tour begins with the deep-rooted Indigenous history of the area, exploring the enduring relationships between the Anishinaabe people and the land and water, and continues through to the present day.

Led by knowledgeable interpreters, visitors will uncover the story behind the world’s first electrically operated lock and its role in shaping an all-Canadian waterway. Along the way, you’ll visit the historic Stores Building and Blacksmith’s Shop, where engaging exhibits bring canal life and operations into focus.

The experience lasts approximately one hour and includes a leisurely 1.5 km walk along paved pathways. Tours can be adapted to meet specific accessibility or group needs.

Echoes of the Rapids
Step onto the Attikamek Trail and South St. Marys Island for a powerful and immersive exploration of Indigenous history. This tour centers Anishinaabe governance, cultural practices, and deep connections to the land and water that have existed since time immemorial.

Through guided interpretation, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of life before first contact, the profound changes brought by colonization, and the lasting impacts that continue to shape communities today. Set against the natural landscape of the rapids, this experience invites reflection on resilience, continuity, and connection.

This tour covers approximately 2 km and takes place on natural trails, offering a slightly more active walking experience. Tours can be adapted to meet specific accessibility or group needs.
