Best times to visit
Elk Island National Park
We look forward to seeing you! Parks Canada encourages visitors to plan ahead, be patient, and consider visiting in the morning or on weekdays.
What are the best days and times to visit?
The park can become very busy on warm weekends during summer. Long weekends are exceptionally busy and temporary gate closures are possible if capacity is reached.
Consider visiting on weekdays or before 11 a.m. on weekends. Early morning visits can be especially rewarding, offering some of the best opportunities for wildlife viewing, quieter trails, and calmer conditions on the water. Enjoy a bike ride before traffic, explore quiet trails while birds and other wildlife are most active, or paddle on Astotin Lake before the wind and crowds arrive. Find more activities and experiences to enjoy during quieter times in the park on our activities page.
If you choose to visit the park during peak hours, be prepared for wait times at the park gate, traffic delays, limited parking, full pavilions and picnic sites, busy trails, potential park access closures and limited or no campsite availability.

Getting here and parking
On warm summer weekends, Elk Island parking lots can become full. Skip the search for parking and consider taking the park bus from MEC or the Royal Alberta Museum in downtown Edmonton.
When parking lots are full, please remember:
- No illegal parking
- Do not wait for spots to open; move on, and try again later
- Follow instructions from staff and traffic flag persons
- Never park on vegetation
- Leave enough room for RVs and buses to maneuver
- Vehicles parked illegally may be towed at the owner’s expense
- Follow all instructions from traffic managers
