Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site

Trip Permit Requirements

Issued: April 29, 2026

Under the authority of the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada, pursuant to Section 7.1(2) of the National Parks General Regulations, and the inherent responsibility of the Haida Nation to protect the lands and waters of Haida Gwaii, the following designated activities require an authorization issued by the Superintendent of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site:

Designated Activities:

 To enter and travel within Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site.

Authorizations:
  • A valid Trip Permit serves as the authorization for persons traveling independently, including but not limited to visitors, researchers, third party contractors, and media personnel.  
  • The person to whom the Trip Permit is issued must be in possession of it while within Gwaii Haanas and must produce it for inspection at the request of the Superintendent, a Park Warden, other Park Officer, or a Haida Gwaii Watchman.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Persons traveling independently must complete a mandatory annual orientation session prior to the start of their trip.
  • Persons traveling independently must have paid the applicable fees for their respective authorizations.

The designation of these activities is deemed necessary for Gwaii Haanas management purposes.

Penalty:

 Engaging in a designated activity without an authorization, or in contravention of the terms and conditions of an authorization, may result in a fine or court appearance under regulations pursuant to the Canada National Parks Act, and where applicable, the cancellation of the authorization.

Tour Operator Requirements

Under the authority of the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada, pursuant to Section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, and the inherent responsibility of the Haida Nation to protect the lands and waters of Haida Gwaii, the following restricted activities require a permit issued by the Superintendent of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site:

 
Restricted Activities: 

 

To transport or accompany persons within Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site as part of the operation of a business.

Authorizations:

  • A valid Gwaii Haanas business licence serves as the permit for tour operator staff while conducting approved business activities.
  • A completed Trip Log serves as the permit for each person other than tour operator staff.
  • The tour operator must be in possession of the appropriate authorization for each person in their group when in Gwaii Haanas and must produce the authorization and proof of identity for inspection at the request of the Superintendent, a Park Warden, other Park Officer, or a Haida Gwaii Watchman.  
Terms and Conditions
  • Trip logs must include the names of all staff and persons other than staff.  
  • Tour Operators must have a valid Gwaii Haanas business licence and be in compliance with all terms and conditions of their business licence.
The designation of these activities as Restricted is deemed necessary for Gwaii Haanas management purposes.
 
Penalty:

Engaging in a restricted activity without a permit, or in contravention of the terms and conditions of a permit, may result in a fine or court appearance under regulations pursuant to the Canada National Parks Act, and where applicable, the cancellation of the permit.
