Riding Mountain National Park
Information Bulletin - Wildfire risk reduction work - Postponed due to unsuitable environmental conditions.
Issued: December 02, 2024
Parks Canada will continue wildfire risk reduction work this fall in Riding Mountain National Park. This work aims to limit the intensity of a potential wildfire, reduce spot fires from windblown embers, and improve the effectiveness of fire suppression techniques to protect Wasagaming and the surrounding community. FireSmart™ is a key part of wildfire risk reduction work.
Operations will take place Monday to Friday, though contracted work to remove old tree plantations may occur on weekends and past daylight hours. This will have no impact on roads or designated trails, although chainsaws and heavy equipment may be heard nearby. Visitors are asked to use caution if traveling in the areas where tree removal is underway.
As shown in Map 1, the following work is planned:
Zones A and B
- Thinning coniferous trees
- Limbing of standing trees
- Piling and burning of debris
Zones C and D
- Removal of coniferous trees by a contractor and Parks Canada staff
- Piling and burning of logging debris
- Salvage of wood for park firewood supply
