Something’s Fishy! (Fish-skinning demonstration)

Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site

Something's Fishy! is a demonstration of fish-skin leather making using chain pickerel. The drop-in program is offered at Kejimkujik in July and August.

Description

Pesa’latl (be·saa·la·dêl): He/She skins him/her (fish)

Chain pickerel is an introduced species in Nova Scotia that negatively impacts native fish and aquatic ecosystems. Removing this species helps protect biodiversity.

Using the whole fish—including tanning the skin into durable leather—demonstrates how thoughtful use of available resources can support conservation while reducing waste.

Join Lisa and see some of the steps of the process of making leather with fish skins.
