Illegal Dumping at Rouge National Urban Park

Rouge National Urban Park

Illegal dumping remains a serious and ongoing issue in Rouge National Urban Park.

Illegal dumping involves the disposal of large scale and/or hazardous waste, creating environmental and safety challenges impacting wildlife, visitors and surrounding communities. It also negatively affects the appearance of the park and surrounding areas, diminishing the experience for everyone who visits.

Commonly dumped materials include:

  • Furniture and household items
  • Tires and scrap metal
  • Chemicals and hazardous materials
  • Renovation debris (drywall, tiles, flooring)
  • Food waste, wood, yard waste and construction materials

These items damage sensitive ecosystems, pose risks to wildlife and park visitors and place significant demands on maintenance crews for Parks Canada and surrounding municipalities.

Individuals found guilty of illegal dumping within Rouge National Urban Park may face fines of up to $100,000 under the Rouge National Urban Park Act.
