Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve
Double epidemic
Issued: June 16, 2026
New measures for visitor safety in forested areas
What:
Due to an ongoing double epidemic in the park reserve, namely the spruce budworm and the hemlock looper, severe defoliation of the forest has been observed. A large majority of the trees on the islands are affected, including around camping sites.
Some camping sites and trails will remain closed for the season, while the opening of others will be delayed. These closures will allow for tree cutting and installing infrastructure throughout the park reserve.
Visitors can expect a visually different landscape and should proceed with caution when using trails and campsites located in forested areas.
