Activities and experiences

York Redoubt National Historic Site

Explore a part of Canada’s military heritage that spans three centuries. Discover coastal walking trails, breathe in the Atlantic Ocean air, and enjoy breathtaking views of Halifax and the Halifax Harbour.

The fortification is closed for the season. The grounds are open but there is no winter maintenance. Parking is available outside the gate.

Step back in time

York Redoubt has an impressive vantage point over the entrance to the channel that flows into Halifax Harbour. This is why the British chose this location to construct one of the batteries to protect the area from the French.

Transport yourself back in time to 1793 and imagine being one of the first soldiers who stood guard from this point.
