Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site
Pointe-au-Père Maritime Historic Site
Founded in 1980, this non profit organization’s mission is to educate people about the maritime history and marine environment of the area and that of Quebec as a whole.
Its main objectives are to:
- reveal the little known history of the Empress of Ireland and its contribution to the demographic growth of Canada;
- protect and enhance the value of the Empress of Ireland wreck and artifacts;
- in collaboration with Parks Canada, reveal the importance of the Pointe-au-Père lighthouse and pilot station;
- create awareness of the maritime history of the area;
- safeguard and enhance the value of the Onondaga submarine;
- collaborate with other museum institutions in the enhancement of the maritime heritage.
Partnership context
The Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site (Parks Canada) is located near the Empress of Ireland and the Onondaga Submarine Museum. The three attractions are presented as part of the Pointe-au-Père Maritime Historic Site.
In 1982, Parks Canada and the Maritime Historic Site of Pointe-au-Père have signed a collaboration agreement to officialise their partnership and work together to enhance the Pointe-au-Père navigational aid station. The Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site (Parks Canada) now offers visitors a better understanding of the complexity of the river and the role played by its lighthouse (visits administered by the partner), the third highest in the country!
