Parks Canada regulates all planning and development in the townsite and across Waterton Lakes National Park.

Any person or corporation doing business in Waterton Lakes must obtain a business licence.

All park users must dispose of waste in accordance with the National Parks Garbage Regulations.

Notice of amendment to franchise fee
Notice of amendment to franchise fee for Waterton Lakes National Park to be filed by FortisAlberta Inc. for acknowledgement by the Alberta Utilities Commission
Application summary
FortisAlberta Inc. will file an application with the Alberta Utilities Commission, at the direction of Waterton Lakes National Park, requesting acknowledgement of the new franchise fee of 12 per cent for Waterton Lakes National Park.
The current franchise fee of 8 per cent will change to 12 per cent, effective January 1, 2027. The franchise fee percentage is applied to the distribution tariff, typically consisting of both distribution and transmission charges. Based on the typical monthly consumption of 625 kilowatt hours, the average monthly franchise fee paid by an average residential customer is expected to increase by $3.32 to $9.60.
The franchise fee is charged in accordance with the franchise agreement between the Waterton Lakes National Park and FortisAlberta Inc., approved by the Commission in Disposition 23791-D01-2018.
