Mi’gmaq Cedar trail
Kouchibouguac National Park

Distance: 0.9 km loop
Time: 30 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Habitat: Forest, estuary, salt marsh, fresh water
This self-guided loop trail begins and ends at the edge of the large field to the right of Callanders Beach. Long wooden boardwalks allow visitors to explore the cedar swamp, a particular environment of the Acadian Forest characterized by its humidity. Almost 20% of the Kouchibouguac National Park's forest is made up of cedar, giving the park a special white cedar conservation status.
Explore how the Mi’gmaq values the physical, medicinal, and spiritual properties of the cedar tree and how they respect and take care of nature. Various species of fern can be found in the shady undergrowth.
Near the coast, the trail offers a view of the lagoon and dune habitats. The park’s cedar stands are a favourite wintering place for several mammals species.
