Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve

Area closure

What: Some areas are closed to traffic in accordance with section 7 of the National Parks General Regulations (SOR/78-213) to protect sensitive habitats and promote the breeding success of seabirds that are sensitive to disturbance.
Access to certain areas of the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve (MANPR) will be restricted from May 1 to August 15, 2026, to protect important nesting sites, while access to specific habitats containing rare plants will be restricted. Other areas are reopened to the public. This measure does not affect the practice of traditional Indigenous activities.

Nidification

Closed year-long Île Nue de Mingan (center, except trails and shoreline), Ile Niapiskau (south barrens except shoreline), La Grande Île (southwest barren except shoreline) Sensitive habitat
Closed year-long The cormorant colonies of Petite Île Sainte-Geneviève, and l’île à Bouleaux du Large Visitor safety

Why:

  • Protect the ecological integrity of the Mingan Archipelago for future generations by limiting disturbance of nesting birds and preventing the risk of trampling on fragile habitats.
  • Ensure visitor safety in areas with health risks (cormorant colonies).

 

Penalty: Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act.
