February Break

Join us in February for a week of extra guided winter fun!

Outdoor programs will be cancelled in cases of extreme cold (base temperature below -25C, wind chill below -30C).

Friday February 16

Gateway to the Stars
8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the breakwater near the Main Beach in Waskesiu
Gather around the campfire, look up, and admire the stars! Learn to navigate the night sky using the Big Dipper and Orion as your guide. Even if the evening is cloudy, come and join us to hear local stories of the night sky. Dress warmly and bring your own blanket and chair if you have one!

Saturday February 17

Birch Bark Biting Workshop
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Visitor Centre
Join local artist Rosella Carney and learn the Cree art form of birch bark biting. All materials provided. Sign up in advance at the Visitor Centre or call 306-663-4522.

Sunday February 18

Hide Tanning Demonstration
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Main Beach in Waskesiu
This invaluable skill is needed for several hide crafts such as mukluks, moccasins and other garments. This several step process requires labour, knowledge and patience. Drop in and join Candace and Cree Longjohn from Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation and help scrape, flesh, or stretch the hide, and learn a thing or two about the tools for the trade.

Ribbon Shirt and Skirt Teachings
10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Visitor Centre
Drop in and join Liza Brown from Lac La Ronge Band and Brenda Courchene-Greyeyes from Sagkeeng First Nation and learn the history of this clothing and about why certain colours are important. Try on a skirt or shirt for inspiration! Draw and color your own future skirt/shirt design!

Wolf Willow Seed Bead Teachings
Join Liza Brown and Brenda Courchene-Greyeyes and learn about the history of the beads, the plant, and the preparation of the seeds. See examples and make a bracelet!
