Mountaineering permits

Kluane National Park and Reserve

All persons spending time within the Icefield Ranges of Kluane National Park and Reserve must have a mountaineering permit. An aircraft access permit must be obtained for each and every landing within the Icefields. Aircraft access permits are issued as part of your Mountaineering Permit. Insurance is required for all expeditions in the Icefield Ranges.

Climbing parties must apply in advance of their trip and all climbers are required to register. For permits beginning April 10 onwards, please submit your applications at minimum one month in advance of your intended departure.

Travel within the icefields is not permitted BETWEEN NOV 15 AND April 9.

Permits are required for any filming or photography for commercial purposes in Kluane National Park and Reserve.  Recreational use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, drones) in national parks and historic sites is prohibited, but special permits may be issued for research or filming activities.

Insurance requirement

Prior to being issued a mountaineering permit, you must provide proof of insurance valid during your visit from the provider of your choice, that:

  • Covers the cost of organized rescue / extraction from the Icefield Ranges for the activities outlined in your permit application to a minimum of CAN$100,000

Climbers requiring rescue will be billed directly for costs associated with extraction. You may then recover these expenses from your insurance provider.

Proof may be a letter issued by the insurance provider(s) confirming coverage for each group member.
