Mountaineering permits

Kluane National Park and Reserve

All persons spending time within the Icefield Ranges of Kluane National Park and Reserve must have a mountaineering permit. An aircraft access permit must be obtained for each and every landing within the Icefields. Aircraft access permits are issued as part of your Mountaineering Permit. Insurance is required for all expeditions in the Icefield Ranges.

Climbing parties must apply in advance of their trip and all climbers are required to register. For permits beginning April 10 onwards, please submit your applications at minimum one month in advance of your intended departure.

Travel within the icefields is not permitted BETWEEN NOV 15 AND April 9. 

Permits are required for any filming or photography for commercial purposes in Kluane National Park and Reserve.  Recreational use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, drones) in national parks and historic sites is prohibited, but special permits may be issued for research or filming activities.


Insurance requirement

Prior to being issued a mountaineering permit, you must provide proof of insurance valid during your visit from the provider of your choice, that:

  • Covers the cost of organized rescue / extraction from the Icefield Ranges for the activities outlined in your permit application to a minimum of CAN$100,000

Proof may be a letter issued by the insurance provider(s) confirming coverage for each group member.

Guide permits

All persons intending to guide a mountaineering expedition into Kluane National Park & Reserve require a license to do so. Please contact Kluane National Park and Reserve for a Business License Package.

Business and service providers, such as mountaineering guides, commercial film operations, and research organizations, are required to have a COVID-19 operation plan in place while operating in the Yukon.

Applying for your Mountaineering Permits

Mountaineering groups must apply for permits at least one month in advance of the start of your trip. Failure to do so will result in delays in processing your application. To apply, the Expedition Leader must:

  1. Complete an Application and sign the attached waiver.
  2. Provide a map or image showing the intended route.
  3. Provide proof of insurance for all group members.

Submit all of the above information for your expedition to: kluanemountaineering-alpinismekluane@pc.gc.ca

Once your completed application is received and payment has been processed, you will be provided a copy of your mountaineering permit for signature. Once it has been signed, in person or electronically, you are clear to begin your trip.

Deregistration

It is mandatory that each expedition deregister in person, by phone or by email with park staff as soon as possible upon completion of the trip.

Failing to deregister is a violation of Park Regulations and will result in a search being initiated. If you fail to check back in you may be financially responsible for the search.
