Kathleen Lake

Kluane National Park and Reserve

You don’t have to venture into the backcountry for awe-inspiring mountain scenery at Kluane. Just a short drive from town is sparkling Mät’àtäna Män (Kathleen Lake), where crystal waters are backed by the mountains of the Kluane Range. Exceptional hiking, boating and camping await visitors the moment they step from their car.

Day use area
Kokanee Trail

Stroll along the Kokanee Trail, a 0.5 kilometre wheel chair accessible boardwalk that skirts the shores of Kathleen Lake starting from the day-use area. Boaters can take advantage of the lake’s boat launch or strike out in a canoe from the pebble beach.

Rather just soak up the scenery? A spacious day-use shelter and a picnic area afford incredible views of the lake and dramatic mountain peaks.

Overnight use of the day use shelter is prohibited.

Kings Throne trail
King's Throne trail

Nearby, the challenging 5-kilometre King’s Throne Trail ascends to an alpine cirque, a kind of natural amphitheatre formed by glacial erosion. From the cirque it is possible to follow an unmarked, unmaintained route to the peak of the mountain.

Alpine flowers and great views are the highlights of this hike. Sturdy footwear is recommended for the trail and route.

Campsite

Pitch your tent and bask in the legendary midnight sun! Kathleen Lake has a 38-site campground with a potable drinking water tap, firewood, bear-proof storage lockers and outhouses. Campfires are allowed in established rings at each campsite.

The campsites at Kathleen Lake can accommodate tents, vans/pick-ups, tent trailers as well as trailers and motorhomes up to 30 ft. Although some sites may be able to accommodate a larger motorhome or trailer, there are no pull-through sites, and many sites have hills or turns in the driveways. Sites 3, 7 and 13 are better suited for big equipment as they have long, flat driveways. All campsites are unserviced.

The campground operates by self-registration on a first come-first serve basis. Payment can be made at the campground kiosk using cash or credit card slip.

To help with accessibility needs, sites 34 and 35 have stand up grills in addition to the fire rings and are close to the potable water taps and outhouse with ramp access.

Group campsites can accommodate up to 15 people in up to 4-5 sleeping units (depending on the size of tents), and are intended for use by parties of more than 5 people or more than 2 camping units (tents). Only tents are permitted in group campsites, and the per person fee is applicable for each person camping.

If a group campsite is still unoccupied at 7pm and there are no other regular campsites available, you may use the campsite for one night as a regular campsite – regular campsite fees apply.
