Description
Parks Canada Realty Activities manages a large number of real property transactions. These include acquiring and disposing real property, as well as managing leases, licences of occupation, and permits for residential, commercial, agricultural, and community uses. Personal information is used to support the planning, acquisition, use, and disposal of Parks Canada real property, as well as the issuance of business licences. It is also used to monitor and manage activities at Parks Canada sites to ensure they comply with the terms and conditions of realty agreements, including leases, licences of occupation, and other permits.
Why a privacy impact assessment was completed
A Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) for this activity is required because personal information is collected and used as part of real property transactions. The PIA helps identify and reduce privacy risks, ensures compliance with applicable legislation and policy, and supports public trust in how personal information is handled.
Additional information
The privacy risks related to collecting, using, and sharing personal information to support real property transactions are low to negligible. To further reduce any remaining risks, Parks Canada follows information management best practices for the retention and secure disposal of personal information. Individuals are informed of the purpose of the collection at the time their information is collected through a Privacy Notice Statement and a new institution specific Personal Information Bank for Realty Activities. Overall, Parks Canada complies with the Privacy Act and the Treasury Board of Canada’s Policy on Privacy Protection.
