Privacy impact assessment summary for the General Class Grants and Contributions Program
Description
Parks Canada’s General Class Grants and Contributions Program (GCGCP) is a transfer payment program that provides funding to eligible recipients in support of projects and activities that align with Parks Canada’s mandate to protect and present Canada’s natural and cultural heritage.
Why a privacy impact assessment was completed
A Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) for this program is required because personal information is being collected and used as part of the decision-making process when the recipient of the funding is an individual. The PIA will identify and evaluate potential risks to the privacy of these data.
Parks Canada’s employees responsible for funding applications and funding agreements under the GCGCP need to collect and record minimal personal information when assessing the eligibility of the recipients and when elaborating the funding agreements.
Additional information
Overall, Parks Canada complies with the Privacy Act and Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat privacy policy instruments. The collection of personal information is limited, and individuals are informed of the purposes of collection through a privacy notice statement.
Low levels of risk were identified in relation to information retention and disposal, as well as the use of portable storage devices, such as flash drives, which fall under information technology security controls. To mitigate the identified risks, Parks Canada is developing disposition schedules in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada and has integrated required information management and IT security enhancements into its long‑term planning and implementation activities. Full implementation is expected by March 31, 2029.
