Fences
Jasper National Park
All fences in Jasper National Park require a Development Permit and must comply with the Architectural Motif Guidelines for the Town of Jasper.
This page outlines fence requirements and explains the two available permitting options: automatic permits for eligible residential projects and permits reviewed by a Development Officer. There is currently no fee for a Development Permit application.
Please note: There is currently no fee for a Development Permit application.
Fence requirements
The following standards apply to all fences, whether approved automatically or through development staff review.
Location
- A fence may be built along and up to your property line but must remain within leasehold boundaries.
- If the fence is shared along a property line, you must obtain consent from the neighbouring lessee prior to construction.
- Property lines must be confirmed before construction.
Determining property lines
Hire a surveyor or use an existing Real Property Report from a registered surveyor.
Before excavating, locate buried utility lines by submitting an online request at Utility Safety Partners | Click Before you Dig.
Materials
Permitted materials include natural elements such as:
- Wood pickets
- Logs
- Stone
If installing a wood fence, ensure there is at least a 1.5 m non-combustible break between the wood portion of the fence and the main structure (for example, by installing a metal gate).
Industrial materials such as chain link fencing are generally not suitable.
FireSmart alternatives are encouraged, such as galvanized “Hog Wire” or “Lawn Fence” panels framed with wood or fire-resistant composite materials.
Fence colours must blend with natural earth tones (browns, greens, greys, blacks, whites).
Height
- Rear yard: Maximum 2.4 m (8 ft)
- Front yard: Maximum 1.8 m (6 ft)
For front yard fences, the top 0.46 m (1.5 ft) must be visually transparent (e.g., lattice or wrought iron; chain link and barbed wire are not permitted).
“Front yard” means the area extending from the front property line to the main structure across the full width of the lot.
For corner lots, the same front yard height limits apply along both street-facing sides.
Neighbour disputes
Shared fence disputes are civil matters to be resolved between neighbours.
