10 spring experiences in Waterton Lakes National Park

Waterton Lakes National Park

The best time to see wildflowers in Waterton Lakes National Park is when they paint the prairie in spring. Step out of your car from any roadside pullout to easily see the variety of wildflowers - including Waterton’s signature bear grass at higher elevation areas of the park. Spring is also time when newborn wildlife and migratory birds arrive, and receding snow opens opportunities for outdoor recreation. Snow melt and spring rain make it a good time to visit the thundering Cameron Falls.

Follow the spring melt to waterfalls

Spring melt brings Waterton’s waterfalls to life! Cameron Falls in the townsite is a popular stop, and Blakiston Falls offers a short hike with a rewarding view. You’ll also find rushing water and lively creeks throughout the park, especially near Cameron Lake and along Red Rock Parkway. Check trail conditions before you go. Spring weather can mean wet trails in town and snow at higher elevations.

Trail conditions

See wildflowers across the park

Spring arrives early on south-facing slopes and open meadows, where the first wildflowers begin to bloom. Areas like Red Rock Parkway and the Blakiston Fan are great places to spot a variety of flowers from easy-access locations. Watch for prairie crocus, glacier lilies, and other early blooms as the snow melts. Stay on trails and roads to help protect these fragile plants!

Take a spring break at a day use area

Melting snow and longer days make spring a great season to enjoy Waterton’s day use areas. Stop at places like Lost Horse Creek or Knight’s Lake for a picnic, a short walk, or a quiet place to relax between activities!

Go where the bison roam

Head to the bison paddock overlook for a chance to see plains bison grazing on the landscape. This herd is part of ongoing conservation efforts to support plains bison in their native habitat. In late spring, the road into the paddock opens to visitors for a scenic drive, and you may even spot calves alongside the herd!

You can also take a short path to the shoreline of Lower Waterton Lake, past the resting place of John George “Kootenai” Brown, one of the park’s earliest wardens.

Watch for signs of spring wildlife

Spring brings new life to Waterton as plants begin to bloom, newborn wildlife and migratory birds arrive, and animals become more active after winter. Visit areas like the Maskinonge for birdwatching or explore other areas of the park for a chance to spot bears and their cubs, and other young animals alongside their parents. Keep your distance and give wildlife space to move naturally.
